Happy Moon Day

To celebrate the anniversary of man's first landing on the moon, July 20, 1969, I was going to create an etsy treasury but soon discovered a lot of people had the same idea. So why re-invent the wheel.

So, it was on this day in 1969 that the United State's Apollo 11 landed on the moon. The first steps were taken by astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. You may remember the famous quote, "That's one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind." by Neil Armstrong as he stepped onto the moon.

Enamelware Pan Becomes Kitty Bed

So, I continue to cross paths with enamelware that I just can't resist ... this huge handled pan came with about 10 other pieces that I bought at an auction. Unfortunately this one has a hole in the bottom ... it could have made a nice planter but I have several already so I decided to transform it into a cat bed.

I created a pillow from scrap material to fit in the bottom. I thought the metal would keep Boots a little cool and the pillow would give him a little cushion.

Boots wasn't sure what to think of his new bed when I placed him in it but quickly adapted and enjoyed laying in the sun.

I have added a couple more enamelware pieces to my store. And don't forget that I am always glad to combine shipping when purchasing multiple items.

Chippy Enamelware Pans Look Great on the Porch

I discovered a box of enamelware pans at an auction and couldn't resist the urge to buy them. The chippy enamel and the green trim was just too cute to pass up.

I brought them home knowing that they would look good on my porch ... and they fit right in with an old table that I painted green and an old bird cage that was also painted green.

You might notice right away the enamelware pan that is holding a basket of flowers but you may have missed the one that is in the crock or the one in the wicker plant stand with flowers in it.

In the small picture to the right, I've pulled the enamelware pan out of the crock so that you can see that it looks just as cute on the table!

I do have a few of these enamelware pans in my store ...

These are a little bigger than the ones I used but I can vision some old mason jars fitting nicely with fresh cut flowers ... or what about small clay pots with herbs?

In what ways have you repurposed your enamelware pans ... sure would like to know or even see a picture!

March Profits to Benefit Relay for Life

This year I will be attending 2 Relay for Life Events. These events raise money for research and programs for the American Cancer Society. We attend these events to walk laps, participate in the fundraisers, honor the survivors, and remember those who lost their lives to cancer.

On April 9th, my husband and I will be traveling to Purdue University to rally with Ashley, who leads the KMA team in memory of her mother, our dear friend, who lost the battle to colon cancer last year.

On May 14th, we will be traveling to Tallmadge, OH to rally with family and friends in our hometown. We will be there supporting my best friend, Kim, and her team, Schertzinger Believer's. It's been a tough couple of years for this team as they watched their mother, one amazing lady, battle cancer and lose the fight last November.

During the month of March I will donate 30% of all my etsy store, Endless Collectabilities, profits equally to the Relay for Life teams listed above. If you would like to make a donation to either of the teams, just click on the team names.

The Ideals magazines were published bi-monthly by the Ideals Publishing Co of Milwaukee, WI. As described on the order form .... Ideals are issues of clean, wholesome, old-fashioned American ideals - homey - philosophy - poetry - art - music - inspiration - neighborliness - things many of us have overlooked during these busy days.

I recently came across some cute little gift books published by the Ideals Publishing Corporation. These publications are a smaller version of the Ideals magazine and they were given in the place of a greeting card.

These all tend to revolve around the theme to love one another. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34 - 35 (NIV). When I read this verse I can't help but to think of the lyrics from a song that the Carpenters used to sing:

I am making a conscious effort this year to Choose Joy, Scatter Kindness, Plant Love, and Live Life. Pay It Forward Friday

I'm starting something new ... a Pay it Forward Friday where I will try to do something for somebody else because I've been blessed myself. I'm starting out with an etsy treasury of items from my treasury friends, fellow etsy'ers that have included me in their treasuries. So please click on the picture and check out each individual's item if you have a chance. I know that you will like what you see :)

If you're not familiar with Pay It Forward you can check out Catherine Ryan Hyde's novel, Pay It Forward, that was published in 2000 by Simon & Schuster. Also in 2000, Warner Brothers created the movie, Pay It Forward based on this novel. This concept has caught on and there is now a Pay It Forward Foundation which defines Paying It Forward as ... "It begins with doing a favor for another person ~ without any expectation of being paid back. Indeed one would request that the recipient of that favor do the same for someone else ~ ideally, for three other people." What a great movement that I hope continues for years to come.

Vintage Kitchen Items

I love old kitchen items ... they intrigue me. I think it's interesting to see how they evolve through years. Take for instance this old hand crank Griswold Meat Grinder. It's been replaced today with electric blenders or food processors. I still have a hand crank grinder that I use today ... makes the best bologna salad, some would call it ham salad, but I grind up a chunk of bologna, some whole dill pickles and mix it with a little mayo - yum, yum!

This Donut Maker by Fairgrove is an interesting kitchen tool. It's not quite as old as the grinder but I'm wondering does anybody make donuts at home anymore? I have to admit that I've never made donuts at home ... it's too convenient to stop by the donut shop. This donut maker can also be used to make pancakes ... bet they come out perfectly round.

Here's another item that may not get used at home much anymore ... a meat tenderizer. You can have the butcher tenderize your meat at the meat counter when you buy it nowadays so is there a need for a this mallet meat tenderizer? I don't have one at home but I have had occasion to tenderize chicken and I use the edge of a small plate :)

I just love September ... to me it marks the beginning of fall, my favorite season. Today was just beautiful. I noticed as we went on a bike ride that the leaves are already falling and pumpkins are already showing up for sale along the roadside. So I did a little searching on the Vintage Village to see what might be for sale that reminds me of fall and look at these goodies that I found...

Remembering My Great-Grandma's Aprons

I received this in an email from my mom. Not sure who the author is but it sure did bring back memories of my great-grandma standing on the porch with her apron on.

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.

The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material.

But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half‑hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids .. And when the weather was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folks knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old‑time apron' that served so many purposes.

April Profits to Benefit Tallmadge Relay for Life

My daughter has a t-shirt that simply says "Cancer Sucks". At first I thought it was a rather vulgar statement. You see I tried to teach my kids not to say 'it sucks' as they were growing up and now my daughter's wearing a t-shirt proclaiming something sucks. But I've come to change my feelings as I watched a good friend of mine lose her life to cancer this year ... Cancer does suck, in fact you could say it is a very vulgar disease.

For over 5 years, my mom has been involved in the Tallmadge Ohio Relay for Life, an event that raises money for research and programs for the American Cancer Society. It is really something special to see this small community come together to help raise money in hopes to find a cure. Last year this community of around 20,000 people raised over $100,000. Many come to the event to walk laps, participate in the fundraisers, honor the survivors, and remember those who lost their lives to cancer.

So in memory of my grandfather, Luther Seeker, and my friends, Roger Bennett, Ro Freilino, and Kim Aspacher. And in honor of my friend and great prayer warrior as I was growing up, Nancy Schertzinger....

Primitive Touches to Guest Bathroom

Our guest bathroom has slowly been getting a make over. Last year I hung a washboard-shelf-towel rack up and since then have been adding vintage items to it as I come across them (mostly found in boxes that I buy at auctions). I made the little blue shelf liner (after seeing it in a Trash to Treasure book) by gluing vintage buttons onto a piece of blue material that I cut with scalloped edges.

The next project was taking some vintage hair items and shaving items and giving them a new home. I attached them to some small wicker baskets with fishing line and hung them on the wall.

Last week I had an idea to use some vintage fabric that I acquired from an auction as a valance. I wanted to hang it with clips and started searching online but then remembered some vintage silver hair clips that I acquired from an auction ... how primitive is that.

I love decorative switchplates and didn't have one in the guest bathroom so I started searching for one and came across Tin Can Sally. There I found the perfect switchplate made from a Johnson and Johnson Powder Tin.

Ideas for Old Books

Valentine's - Show the Love

I just love that verse ... I can still hear those words being read on my wedding day. That was almost 25 years ago and our love is stronger now than ever.

I believe that love grows with every little thing you do. You can express your love this Valentine's Day by doing little things for the ones you love such as making a special Valentine's Day card. I've found some cool websites to help you get started...

February is a fascinating month ... starting with Groundhog Day (2nd), Super Bowl Sunday (7th), Vancouver Olympic Games Begin (12th), Valentine's Day (14th), President's Day (15th), Mardi Gras (16th), and Ash Wednesday (17th) ... what variety, not to mention the weather is very unpredictable in February. New Year ... New Goals for 2010

In March of this year, I will have had my etsy shop open for 1 year and what fun that year has been. I have ...

opened Endless Collectabilities in March 2009 and as of today, have 64 sales, 52 shop hearts, and 6,351 visits;
joined the Vintage Village (a social network on ning) in May 2009 and became a premium member in October 2009;
created my first blog entry on June 26, 2009.

What have I learned?

Listing items on a regular basis increases sales.
Everyone needs a support group such as a social network of people with the same interests.
For a blog to be useful you need to find topics that interests others.

So now where do I want to go in 2010?

I am happy with my etsy sales. I want to continue to list items on a regular basis. I enjoy finding items, researching their history and adding them to my shop. It's heartwarming when somebody buys an item because they used to have one or it reminds them of ...
I want to stay involved with the Vintage Village on a regular basis. It's a great support group. There are great people there willing to share their knowledge and life experiences.
My blog ... I want it to be more useful. This is a bit of a struggle for me. I started my blog because I read that is how to market your shop but I never really thought about a mission statement so I've been floundering with what to blog about. In 2010, I want to use my blog to market vintage as well as vintage sellers.

Here's wishing us all happiness, fun, success, good health, and love in 2010!

Pretty ... Pretty Tins

You've seen from previous postings that I love vintage tins ... and I've acquired more, some of which are for sale in my store and some I've kept for myself. I thought that as I share some of the tins for sale in my store that it would be nice to share some ideas on how tins could be used.

This dainty Baret Ware Art Grace tin made in England has the most vibrant colored flowers on it. It is 5.5" tall, 5.5" wide and 4.25" deep. I actually have one of these on my dresser to collect stray items in. It is very feminine looking and looks great sitting on top of a vintage embroidered dresser scarf. I also picture this tin holding sewing notions ... it would look great in a sewing room holding vintage scraps of lace, fabric or trims.

This lovely embossed footed tin chest is a Fricke and Nacke Design by Mavis, West Germany. It is 3.5" tall, 7.25" wide and 5" deep. This is a great size tin to hold mail that gets tossed on your kitchen cupboard; or add a vintage doily and fill it with some jewelry.

This lovely tin with daisies and portrait on the lid was made in England by Edward Sharp & Sons LTD of Maidstone Kent. I believe that it once held toffee. It is 1.75" tall, 5.5" wide and 4" deep. Wouldn't this look lovely on a desk holding some paper clips or rubber bands?

This tin of a quaint little brook meandering through a country town with a little country church is stamped 'OLIVE CAN CHICAGO' on the bottom. It has a 8.25" diameter and is 1.25" tall. This is the perfect size to hold vintage buttons ... not too tall. It would also make a nice gift container for homemade fudge.

This great 70s tin from Olive Can has a 9.75" diameter and is 3.75" tall. It is stamped 'Olive Can' on the bottom. This has Christmas cookies written all over it ... would be a great gift container or serving container for your Christmas goodies.

Most of my ideas on how to use vintage tins deal with preserving them and mostly using them to organize. There are some really nifty projects out on the web like this Vintage "Tin" Clock on JUNKMARKET Style and made by Janis Gurney.

Dressing up Willow Baskets full of Coleus Plants for Indoors

A couple weeks ago I brought in some coleus plants that I had displayed outside on my porch. These plants were part of my son's biology project 3 years ago ... hard to believe they have not only survived at my house that long but they have also reproduced. When a piece breaks off I put it in water until the root system develops and then plant it. This spring they were attacked, several times, when I first put them out on the porch by racoons (I'm guessing) until a friend of mine suggested sprinkling red pepper around them. That did the trick and I was able to nurse some of them back to health.

So, I've brought them inside and decided that the willow baskets needed a little vintage vavoom (I am loving this book) . I was at a tag sale not too long ago and bought a bag of scrap pieces of lace and some trinkets and I really like the effect.

They even look good on the porch...

Vintage Kitchen Towel Ticking Stripe Fabric

Something draws me to the old ticking striped fabrics ... it could be the softness of the fabric, or the various stripe layouts and colors, or the simpleness of them ... I just love them!

Most of these pieces of fabric that I have acquired are linen, a textile woven from fibers of a flax plant, and measure between 15″ to 17″ selvage to selvage. These narrow fabrics were woven to be used to make kitchen towels or I've seen them used as curtains in pie safes that had wire mesh window openings.

Linen tends to make a good kitchen towel because it is a very strong fabric, highly absorbent, lint free, it resists dirt, and lasts for generations. Linen will also soften on repeated washings.

Linen wrinkles very easily adding to the vintage charm but if you don't like the wrinkles, after delicately washing them in cold water with regular detergent, line/tumble dry them until just damp and then iron.

You can certainly use them in projects to get that soft romantic Vintage Vavoom look as I have done with this basket that sits on the island in my kitchen. I was experimenting with chalkboard paint and created this cute plaque from a silver serving plate that was damaged and spoon angel. I thought it was kind of "bistro romantic" but had no place to hang it in my kitchen. So I found this basket in the basement and decided I could hang the plaque from it. I then used one of the red ticking striped pieced of fabric which layered nicely in the bottom and now my basket becomes a welcome to the kitchen and a fruit basket (or at Halloween time - a treat basket). Works great on the island in the kitchen.

Vintage Tins and Bottles ... more History

I've done a little more research and have found that this Bokar tin bank is a replica of the package of Bokar Coffee sold by the A&P stores. Bokar Coffee was a brand of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company in the 50's and 60's. It measures 4" tall x 2.25" wide x 1.75" deep and has the classic bokar colors, black, red, and gold. Not dated but from my research, it appears to be from the 1950's-1960's.

This colorful tin once held 2 1/2 ozs of Mellomints by Brandle & Smith Co., of Philadelphia, PA. The tin measures 3 3/4" x 2 1/4" x 1 7/8". There are some speckles of white paint on the lid adding to the vintage character. Again I couldn't find a date but from my research, it appears to be from the 1930's.

This advertising dose glass shaped like a druggist graduate has a pedestal base and the glass flares to a wider opening at the top. There is vertical embossing along one side, "UNCLE SAM'S HERBS" and the reverse side has "TEA SPOON" 1-12 and "TABLE SPOON" 1-3 measurements. This glass measures 4" tall with a 2" diameter. I am unable to come up with any dates for this unique glass.

Tins, Bottles, Boxes, and more Tins!

Last weekend I was lucky enough to go to an auction with my mom and the weekend before I went to an auction with my daughter ... what fun! Tins/bottles/boxes seemed to be in the cards for me both weekends. Here are some of my finds...

Some of them I've already put in my etsy store, some I will have up on ebay and some I'm keeping for myself.

The one that I just adore is this pink cardboard prescription pill box ... it's just so cute. It is very small measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 5/8" and still has the prescription label intact. There is no date on the label so I did a little research and found that the Meyer Brother's & Co. existed in the late 1800's and early 1900's but can't find when they went out of business. Since I didn't get anywhere with the company search, I searched to see when cardboard prescription boxes were made and found anywhere from the 1930's - 1960's. Based on some of the boxes I saw, I would guess this box to be from the 1960's.

This Judson Thomson Slotted Clinch Rivet tin is kind of catchy with it's black text, product image, and yellow background. It contains directions on the back for driving and clinching the Thomson slotted clinch rivet. The Judson L. Thomson manufacturing company was in business in Waltham, MA in the late 1800's, they were in violation of section 3 of the Clayton Act in 1944, and they made improvements to the automatic riveting machine in 1962. Too bad there were no rivets in this tin to add to the charm.

White Heart Project .... Done!

So over the weekend, I finished up the two smaller hearts (see previous blog entry) which left me with the three bigger hearts to do.

I knew that I wanted to add pictures in these bigger hearts. I used the kids senior pictures but finding a picture of me and my husband was challenging ... every picture of us tended to include a kid in the middle :) After adding the pictures I created the yo yos with cross-stitched button centers spelling out L-O-V-E and using the same material as the background for the smaller hearts. Still needed a little something ... so I added a music note charm to my daughter's picture since she is studying to be a music teacher, a hockey skate charm to my son's picture since that is and has been one of his passions, and a cross from an old ring that I used to wear to me and my husband's picture since our family loves the Lord and give thanks and praise to him everyday.

So here's the finished project ...

The picture doesn't do it justice ... I just love the way it turned out! I've just started reading the book Vintage Vavoom: Romantic Decorating with One-of-a-Kind Finds. I'm really enjoying the book and I think this project personalizes my living space with a soft romantic look as well as brings in some momentos of my past ... Vintage Vavoom!

Small White Hearts Done

This weekend I really enjoyed working on this project. I finished the small white hearts.

For the background of both of the small white hearts, I used leftover fabric from my one and only quilt project (about 20 years ago). I also glued a little piece of blue-ish, gray sparkly ric rac and a dainty little fabric rose to each.

For the heart on the left, I pinned a locket brooch that I used to wear years ago which has a picture of each of my kids in it from when they were 1-2 years old. I glued a couple vintage buttons to finish the look.

For the heart on the right, I made a heart out of vintage buttons and then finished the look with a cute clip on earring that I just adore.

I've almost got the last 3 white hearts done ... just looking for one last picture.

I just love these white heart picture frames ... they hang in my bedroom. I've had every intention of putting pictures in them but have not found the right pictures. I've figured out the reason ... I'm trying to find the right size picture to fit in the hearts and use a mat of course.

This weekend I decided that I'm going to finish this project and I'm going to think outside the box ... I'm not going to look for the perfect picture and mat ... I'm going to try something different.

Labor Day Weekend - Yeah!

Labor Day ... the unofficial end of summer. Last weekend at the lake cottage, beach, camp ... or summer home. Barbeques, cookouts, and picnics. Shopping the Labor Day sidewalk sales. Family time ... a three day weekend of pure family time.

The Department of Labor explains that Labor Day is "a tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country".

Through the years, it's evolved from a labor union celebration to a last fling of summer activities. As for me and my family we will be spending time together, relaxing, and a little barbeque-ing. Hope you enjoy your Labor Day!

Yay, You! Graduation Party Theme

The book we used for the theme of my son's graduation party was Yay, You! by Sandra Boynton. It is a fun book and we used excerpts from it in almost everything we did ...

The most fun was trying to grow the grass for the table decorations. We planted the grass in cut off plastic cups a month ahead of time. The grass began growing after 3 days. After several hair cuts it wasn't looking too good. We pitched it and planted more about 10 days before the party. We let it grow and didn't give it a hair cut until the night before the party and it looked wonderful!

The highlight of the party was the chocolate fountain. To dunk in the chocolate, we served strawberries, maraschino cherries, marshmallows, wafer cookies, pretzels, caramels, and cream puffs.

The weather was beautiful and a great time was had by all!

Graduation Party Themes - Dr. Seuss

We are preparing for my son's graduation party which is tomorrow (lots of prayers that the rain either comes before or after the party) and we are into themes. Two years ago we used Dr. Seuss's, "Oh, The Places You'll Go!". Well, we didn't want to use the same theme this year so we searched for a book to base the party on and thanks to the Books for Graduates list on the Barnes & Noble site we found one. But you have to wait until after the party to find out what book we picked.

Here are some pictures from my daughter's, "Oh, The Places You'll Go!" graduation party.

We used excerpts from the book everywhere ... it is really a great book for a graduate. Here is the cake, "Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away!". The bowls above are toppings for ice cream!

The basket for cards was set up to look like a hot air balloon with a card on it that read, "You'll be on your way up! You'll be seeing great sights! You'll join the high fliers who soar to high heights." The book was also at this table for friends and family to view.

The tablecloths, napkins, and plates were orange, pink, lime green, yellow, and blue.

Each table had a tent card made out of colored popsicle sticks with a different excerpt from the book on both the front and back.We also made the invitations (sorry-no picture) that we sent out and you guessed it ... there was an excerpt from the book on it. My daughter and I had a lot of fun making the invitations, table decorations, card basket, and just being creative together. It was a great day ... lots of family, friend, food and fun.

Happy Birthday America!

Relax and enjoy the holiday no matter what you do ... friends, family, fireworks, picnic, parade, BBQ, or beach. Just don't forget to take a moment to remember the people who have fought to keep our country free.

Speaking of picnics do you have a favorite recipe to share? I made this Acini Fruit Salad for the first time and it is a wonderful picnic recipe because it makes a lot.

Cook 16oz of acini de pepe pasta the night before the picnic. After you drain it and it's cool break it up with a fork so there are no clumps. Drain 1 can of pineapple tidbits and save the juice. Whisk the pineapple juice, 2 eggs, 2 T. of flour, 1 1/2 cups of sugar, and 1 tsp. of salt together in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Simmer until thick. Pour over the cooled pasta, mix well and refrigerate over night. The next day, add drained pineapple, 3 tall cans of drained mandarin oranges, and 16 oz of cool whip. Mix well and refrigerate. You can also add maraschino cherries, sliced fresh strawberries or any other fruit you would like

AllButtons on Etsy where she sells antique and vintage buttons. She loves the many styles and colors and it facinates her to see how the buttons have changed over the years.

AllPatterns on Etsy where she sells 100's of different patterns from many decades by many makers and for many styles. Many of the patterns for sale were never used and most of the ones that were cut have been very carefully done and are neatly folded and placed back into the envelope.

Timeless Treasures Antiques and Collectibles on Ruby Lane where she sells a variety of antiques and collectibles.

Elaine was an antique appraiser and sold antiques and collectibles for over 20 years. She's a very interesting lady and I found that I have some things in common with her.
